In April 2022, we’re going to trial, with a special focus on our friends in Australia, a full 12 hours of workshop online dedicated to attachment-informed EMDR specifically for addictions, led by Annabel McGoldrick.
And before that, you can join Annabel for a taster half day, also at Oz-friendly times, and an introduction to the basics.
These events will be most appreciated by colleagues who have already done our Unleash your EMDR Part 1 workshop on the basics of AI-EMDR, though for these two, that’s not a precondition.
Times: 1) 0700-1200 GMT/1800-2300 AEDT. 2) 0700-1200 BST/1600-2100 AEST
Venue: Online, on Zoom.
Cost: £75 for half-day webinar. £375 for full three day workshop (note that this includes taxes, full facilitation & workshop materials). Discounted to £195 for those who have already done a Part 2 Unleash Addictions workshop with Annabel.
About these workshops
Many of our clients with attachment wounds go on to develop full-blown life threatening addictions, from anorexia through to alcoholism.
Learn on in this three-day workshop, and/or in outline at the webinar, how specifically to target the euphoria of urges and addiction, the buzz that drives drinking, binge-eating through to drug use and pornography.
Even everyday addictions like scrolling through the internet, nail biting and watching TV can be dealt with using these methods.
As part of each workshop you’ll get to watch a demonstration, and on the full version to practise using these tools with space to discuss your own casework.
To give you a taster of the workshop content, do read Annabel’s recent article (link) for the EMDR Therapy Quarterly Winter 2020 Vol 2 No 1, the Journal of the UK EMDR Association and reproduced here on EMDR Focus website.
- The Feeling State Addiction Protocol (FSAP) from Robert Miller for reducing the intensity of the addictive buzz.
- The DeTur method from Arnold Popky for reducing urges.
- Jim Knipe’s inimitable way of combining the two.
- Ways to target with EMDR the shame of being trapped in addictive patterns.
- Skills to heal the roots of addiction in the past by repairing the ruptures in early attachment relationships.
- Understand the relational dynamics that fuel or reduce addiction in the present.
- Learn from Annabel’s experiences, including mistakes in applying all of these tools with her clients.
Thank you Annabel – what a fantastic day – I learned so much and I really appreciate all your hard work and enthusiasm! It wasn’t’ death by PowerPoint’ but inspiration by PowerPoint. Loads of ideas and material were covered in that one short day and I look forward to re-reading the slides and following up on the people and ideas to find out more. I will need to practise and consolidate the protocol but I feel confident to do so. The short piece of work I did as a client has been amazing – it seems to have completely uncoupled eating unhealthy food from the buzz-feeling of a sense of belonging, which I’m very happy about!
The workshop was very rich and informative. I found the live demo video really helpful and the practicums. Facilitation was excellent and encouraging. It was helpful that other theories and literature on addictions was drawn on, as this allowed the workshop to be pitched to clinicians with varying experience of working with addictions.
As always, the workshops are innovative and support the development of advanced EMDR skills, providing clear and applicable guidance on how to work with more complex presentations using EMDR. It was also really valuable that Annabel offered guidance on what to focus on if clients struggle to access particular information about their experience when setting up targets.
It was a useful reminder of the dopamine effect. The 12-steps discussion was very helpful and interesting to see how it works in EMDR and with AF EMDR. The handouts were great – like having an in-depth book on the topic which I will certainly make use of.
I really enjoyed the training and thought the presentation and materials were excellent. Many thanks.
A really enlivening workshop and fabulous overview linking EMDR with . . . ‘everything’. Extensive resources most welcome
I wasn’t sure addictions would really be up my street as I don’t see these clients and nor do my supervisees (or so I thought)! But in the first 10 minutes I could see just how applicable this is to my work in therapy and supervision! I loved Annabel’s enthusiasm and humanness. She made it all seem so effortless and I hope to be able to use the protocol with the same level of confidence she does some day. As always the training was extremely well organised and efficient.
These workshops include full, in-depth and live demonstrations of EMDR with real personal issues. This can be a very powerful experience, both for the group and for the volunteer kindly offering themselves to work openly this way.
Participants are invited to work in pairs and triads on similarly real issues, using the tools of attachment-informed EMDR, and this too can go surprisingly deep.
While we find that participants value this opportunity, both as therapist and client, the experience can be triggering. For our part, we commit to doing our best to keep the training safe and contained.
We correspondingly ask participants to take responsibility for their own responses, and to remain at all times open and respectful towards the processes and learnings that will unfold as the workshops proceed.
You will of course have the opportunity to decline to bring personal issues to the practicum, but for your own sake and that of others on the workshop, please do allow space for a willingness to be vulnerable, as well as to be bold.
By registering for an EMDR Focus workshop, and recognising that participation can involve both observation and personal experience of sometimes profound trauma processing, participants agree to take appropriate responsibility for their own emotional wellbeing, and to ensure they have access to any necessary therapeutic and/or supervisory support following the workshop.
If you need to cancel up to six weeks before the workshop, we will refund your fee minus a 10% handling charge. After that, refunds will be at the discretion of EMDR Focus.
