AI-EMDR With Parts/Ego States

Book Now

In December 2021, we trialled a full 12-hour workshop online dedicated to working with Parts and Ego States in Attachment-Informed EMDR, led by our EMDR Focus team colleague Annabel McGoldrick.

Annabel focuses especially on how EMDR meshes with Richard Schwartz’s Internal Family Systems (IFS) and concepts of Structural Dissociation.

Running over three half days with facilitated triads, bookings are open to colleagues who have already done our Unleash your EMDR Part 1 workshop on the basics of AI-EMDR.

The workshop comes with 12 EMDR Association UK CPD points.

As colleagues know who’ve done our Unleash your EMDR Parts 1 and 2, working with parts and ego states is a central tool in effective attachment-informed EMDR.

So picking up both on feedback from attendees who would like more on this, and also reflecting Annabel McGoldrick’s personal enthusiasm especially for Richard Schwartz’s model of Internal Family Systems (ISF), this workshop goes deep into both the theory and practice of how best to identify, welcome and then work creatively with parts of the personality that hold a client’s key healing potential.

In this workshop, we proceed from the understanding that ALL parts of a client’s presentation, however dysfunctional or frightening or debilitating, came into being with a survival-informed and therefore beneficial intent. That’s the way evolution works, so that’s the way we need to work with trauma.

With her background in working in frontline settings with families and addictions in Australia especially, Annabel brings to this workshop a rich and personal take on the difference an understanding of and enthusiasm for parts and ego states can make to best-practice EMDR with an attachment focus.

As we’re pitching this in the Northern Hemisphere winter and the Southern Hemisphere summer, UK- and Europe-based colleagues will need to get up rather early for this workshop, while our Australian and Kiwi friends will need to fortify themselves to stay up rather later into the evening than might be their habit.

  • To explore how working with Parts can help EMDR therapists through all phases of the Standard Protocol (SP) particularly when working with complex clients.
  • Particular attention will be paid to preparation, phase 2 of the Standard Protocol to ensure all parts are resourced and ready for phase 4 desensitisation. Particular reference will be made to others using parts work as preparation and interweaves such as Bruce Hersey who enriches EMDR with interweaves informed by the Internal Family System (IFS; Jim Knipe’s work with parts and his drawings of ovals from The EMDR Toolkit.
  • Other leaders in the EMDR field who work with parts will be referenced during the course such as Dolores Mosquera; Shirley Jean Schmidt; Ana Gomez and Sandra Paulsen.
  • Dialogue with Parts can prepare prospective EMDR clients in phase 2, particularly those with addiction issues, structural dissociation and other forms of blocks to EMDR processing.
  • The workshop will also explore the benefit of IFS interweaves in phase 4 looping and blocked processing, and IFS-informed tools in Phase 7 to help close an incomplete session.

Learning Outcomes:

  1. Enhanced client preparation for EMDR (phase 2) by achieving agreement from all Parts to target particular memories;
  2. Clearer target identification (phase 3) following dialogue with Parts in Phase 2.
  3. Easier Phase 4 desensitising with BLS, facilitated by addiction interweaves, shaped by useful IFS questions to release blocked processing.

This was an excellent workshop and helped me to make sense of IFS parts work and how to use EMDR with them.

Really well thought out and conveyed enthusiasm and belief in what Annabel does in her own work. The mini breakout rooms were great!

It felt a very useful overview of the field with the invitation to go into the various practitioners’ approaches as suits you. Particularly struck by the words about need for therapists to get to know their own parts and possible triggering by client’s parts.

You’re a fabulous trainer, Annabel- authoritative, knowledgeable, infectiously enthusiastic, competent. Proud to be associated with you!

EMDR Focus workshops include full, in-depth and live demonstrations of EMDR with real personal issues. This can be a very powerful experience, both for the group and for the volunteer kindly offering themselves to work openly this way.

Participants are invited to work in pairs and triads on similarly real issues, using the tools of attachment-informed EMDR, and this too can go surprisingly deep.

While we find that participants value this opportunity, both as therapist and client, the experience can be triggering. For our part, we commit to doing our best to keep the training safe and contained.

We correspondingly ask participants to take responsibility for their own responses, and to remain at all times open and respectful towards the processes and learnings that will unfold as the workshops proceed.

You will of course have the opportunity to decline to bring personal issues to the practicum, but for your own sake and that of others on the workshop, please do allow space for a willingness to be vulnerable, as well as to be bold.

By registering for an EMDR Focus workshop, and recognising that participation can involve both observation and personal experience of sometimes profound trauma processing, participants agree to take appropriate responsibility for their own emotional wellbeing, and to ensure they have access to any necessary therapeutic and/or supervisory support following the workshop.

If you need to cancel up to six weeks before the workshop, we will refund your fee minus a 10% handling charge. After that, refunds will be at the discretion of EMDR Focus.
