Attachment-informed EMDR with Intergenerational Narratives, Parts/Ego States & Dreams
Colleagues who already have Unleash Your EMDR Part 1 under their belt are warmly invited to join us on a deep, rich and rewarding dive into extended attachment-informed interweaves which in Phase Four of EMDR’s standard approach can make an astonishing, life-transforming difference to how clients experience themselves in the world.
As products of three-and-a-half billion years of life’s evolution on this planet, and without needing to believe in any particular spiritual understanding of that life’s meaning, each of us holds dimensions of personal, family, group, collective identity and experience that inform every microsecond of how we relate to ourselves, to those we live and work with, to the world and our place in it.
On the three part-days of Unleash Your EMDR Part 2 online, we give you the tools to work with parts, ego states and internalised parents, and especially dreams (catnip for the transpersonal therapist), in ways that that can inspire, amaze and even stun.
See the buttons at the top and bottom of this page to book a place on the workshop. Here are our current dates (note times alternating US/CN and AU/NZ(ish!)-friendly) on which you can also click to be taken to the booking form.
Workshop Focus
The Intergenerational Extended Interweave
“Invented” by Mark Brayne on the fly right in the middle of a live demonstration session on a 2017 in-person workshop and since standing the test of time, the extended intergenerational interweave has become a central tool for many colleagues now using the attachment-informed approach to EMDR.- While Unleash Part 1 focuses on identifying and addressing the Levels 1 and 2 experiences of nervous system rupture and absence of repair in our clients’ stories,Unleash Part 2 takes us on to Levels Three – the internalised parent or primary attachment figure from childhood – and Four, the collective trauma experience that goes with our client’s ethnic/religious/ national/cultural/group identity.
- Inviting therapist and client into a kind of “session-within-a-session”, we introduce the tools that take therapy into the much deeper past, using creative imagination to break the generational “spells” that so often resonate down to the present.
Working with Parts – the Transfer of Perspective
While Internal Family Systems is now very much flavour of the moment in the EMDR world, the Transfer of Perspective extended interweave allows an perhaps simpler and easier inward exploration of split-off aspects of a client’s self and way of being in the world that may now be highly destructive – angry, self-harming, shut down, violent, controlling, suicidal – all coming into being in an individual’s psyche with an initially survival-related purpose.- The ToP offers a framework and focus for clients to shift their perspective or point of view into the split-off/dissociated (Emotional) Part from within which they can process the most complex targets and narratives both personal and collective.
- It’s a tool that’s particularly useful within the ai-EMDR Dream framework, inviting the parts to bring their stories into conscious awareness and let them go – whether held over the years by monsters, or the dark bogs of dreams, of black-clad men with guns, gunge or water in the cellar of a dream, a voice on the shoulder, a wall blocking access to feelings or facts, an angry boss, an introjected abuser even.
- As with the ig-EMDR interweave, this quickly becomes one of an attachment-informed EMDR therapist’s key tools.
Dreams
Whether fresh or recurring, dreams are signals from the unconscious that there are stories and stuff that want to be worked on. They ask to be taken seriously, as portals into the client’s literal formative past.- Every aspect of the dream – every object, every part, every dimension, every character, every projection, every building and room – is best understood as a part of the dreamer’s self, wanting to be known and integrated.
- Dreams are like an entry hallway into the narrative past where any door taken can lead in powerfully healing directions – as Freud put it, the therapist’s “Royal Road to the client’s Unconscious”.
- On the final stretch of this now well-embedded three-day workshop working with colleagues from around the world, we work as on the first two days with a volunteer bringing a real and personal story aching for resolution in the triggered moments of the present – always the best place to identify where EMDR needs go.

Key Workshop Info
In these advanced workshops in integrative, advanced and transpersonal EMDR for attachment-informed complexity, Mark Brayne teaches ways to work with the most challenging clients, with generous and essential practicum space to practise these new skills for real and in full, with kind and focused support from our experienced (and friendly) team of EMDR Focus facilitators.
Workshops are built around live demonstrations of ai-EMDR, with pair- and triad-work as both therapist and client. Groups are kept manageable in size, so there’s rich opportunity for questions and discussion. You’ll have a unique opportunity to learn, at warp-speed and building on everything you were introduced to on your basic EMDR training, how to deliver the most powerful and effective EMDR whether online or in-person.
Unleash your EMDR – Release the Magic Part 2 (like Part 1) has 12 EMDR Association UK CPD points and 12 CE points from EMDRIA. To qualify for the appropriate attendance certificates, colleagues will need to attend not just most of the teaching but also all three daily practicums. Recordings for those registered will be available for one month following the workshop. As long as anything else missed is viewed within that time frame, the certificates count for continued accreditation or certification.
Testimonials – Just a Few
I was already a die-hard attachment informed EMDR fan before doing any of Mark’s training but I feel like my practice has moved to a whole different level. I have clients tell me that they feel one session using this approach produced greater changes in their belief systems and behaviour than the 20 or so years of previous therapy they had experienced (including standard EMDR).
I am not going to lie, the Part 2 training sounded a little far-fetched but, given the success I had post Part 1, I was game. After experiencing the intergenerational trauma work personally during the sessions, I am 100% in.
One of the most powerful and valuable courses I have experienced. To be in such a safe place to engage fully in the supervised practicums meant that the learning was embedded at a very deep level, which can only be of benefit to both client and therapist.
Mark is exceptionally clear in his presentation, and I value his capacity to hold a clear structure for each day. His demonstrations were rich with opportunities to learn through observing the work in real time. The demo on Case 2 was especially rich and very moving. In the demo on day 3, the work with a defended client opened up valuable space for exploration and realisation of the potential multi-layered complexities that can arise.
I had the scripts for the three techniques from Unleash Part 1 but didn’t feel confident using them without proper training. Part 2 focused on teaching the necessary skills step-by-step: we reviewed the script, discussed what to do and why, observed a live demonstration, and practiced in triads through role-playing. I left feeling much more confident as an EMDR practitioner. Since then, I’ve used these techniques with clients and the results have been amazing.
I loved this course, it was so informative, Mark was excellent, so warm and responsive. His style, and emphasis on attachment, warm, kindness was missing so much in our training.
This is the missing piece from the standard EMDR, 110%. I feel that it requires clinical skill and this was expertly given by Mark and his team of facilitators. Quite frankly they were all amazing and I feel Mark deserves recognition for the excellent contribution given to clinical practice and the EMDR community.
To Bear in Mind
These workshops include full, in-depth and live demonstrations and experiences of EMDR with real personal issues. This can be powerful stuff, both for the group and for volunteers kindly offering themselves to work openly this way. Participants are invited to work in triads on similarly real issues, using the tools of attachment-informed EMDR, and this too can go deep. While we find that participants value this opportunity, be aware that both as therapist and client, the experience can be triggering.
For our part, we commit to doing our best to keep the training safe and contained. We correspondingly ask participants to take responsibility for their own responses, and to remain at all times open and respectful towards the processes and learnings that will unfold as the workshops proceed. You will of course have the opportunity to decline to bring personal issues to the practicum, but for your own sake and that of others on the workshop, we ask attendees to allow space for a willingness to be vulnerable, as well as to be bold.
By registering for an EMDR Focus workshop, and recognising that participation can involve both observation and personal experience of sometimes profound trauma processing, participants agree to take appropriate responsibility for their own emotional wellbeing, with access to any necessary therapeutic and/or supervisory support following the workshop should that be needed.
See here for our full Ts&Cs, including the waiver and release small print.
Cancellation Policy
If you need to cancel up to six weeks before the workshop, we will refund your fee minus a 10% handling charge. After that, refunds will be at the discretion of EMDR Focus.
